During 1999, I will take you through the stages I go through as I start my 2-year-olds and prepare to show them. I will tell you where we are having success but, (maybe even more importantly), I will tell you where I am having problems and what I will do to solve them. I do not claim to have the "perfect" system for training a horse. I just have the system that has worked for me. I feel it is important to stress to you that I expect you to look at what I do, compare it to other methods you have seen or heard of, and arrive at the method that works for YOU! You are training YOUR horse so it is important that you feel comfortable with whatever you are teaching your horse. That's why you must develop the method that will be successful for you. To help you toward this goal, I will have other trainers post here from time to time and let them tell you what they are doing at that stage in time. That way you can compare it with what I am telling you and arrive at your own conclusions as to which works best. I also want to stress that I will not "spoon-feed" you. I want you to know what we are doing, why we're doing it and decide for yourself if that is what you want to do with your horse. If I were to just tell you what to do, you wouldn't learn anything and it would not be allowing you to truly be the trainer of your horse. Speaking of training. I like to say that, in my program, we don't feel like we are trainers as much as we are coaches. Through a program of calisthenics, we develop our horse's movement and our ability to communicate with our horse. At the start, you and your horse may only have 10 words/signals that it truly understands but, as time passes, we'll constantly build upon each of your vocabulary to build a team.
