Trip to Italy from Cleve...
I took my first International Clinic
February 13th and 14th. Jana and I went to Asti, Italy to
Casanova Quarter
Horses. The farm is owned by Giovinni and Giuliana Cozzo and managed by
Keith Long and Stefania Ugolini with assistants Emily Bailey and Janina
Toelle.
The trip was not as difficult as I had anticipated until we got
to Paris, France. They offered no help with directions and left us with some
bad memories of the French. We missed our connecting flight to Italy, thanks to
their hospitality. We arrived in Torino, Italy on Monday afternoon and were
glad to be there. Keith was waiting for us and gave us a small tour on our way
to the farm.
The farm is beautiful, and it would hold it's ground with
any farm in the USA, with a very nice show string, a nice set of broodmares,
and a stallion roster second to none.
I worked with some of their
horses on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, Wednesday night we took a short drive to
Enzo Gola's five star piano bar and restaurant. The restaurant is on the top of
a mountain and overlooks Torino. Enzo rolled out the red carpet and the grappa,
and we all had an exceptional evening.
Thursday we drove over to the
Mediterranean. It was like going from Georgia to South Florida in 2 hours. It
was very relaxing.
Friday was the first day of the clinic. I was
definitely nervous about how this was going to work with a translator. Eddie,
my translator, became my shadow for the next 3 days. She had her work cut out
for her, with my Texas slang; not everything I say is in the dictionary. She
was great and we shared a lot of laughs.
We had students from Italy,
Germany and Belgium. After the first half of the day, we all relaxed and we got
a lot of work done. They all had very nice horses, great questions and we had a
lot of fun. We feel as if we made new friends for life, and extend our welcome
to them to come and visit us.
Sunday night Giovianni and Guliana invited
us to their home for dinner and superior wine tasting (don't play Italian pool
- you can't win!) It was another great evening.
Jana and I would like
to say "hello" and "thank you" to all our new friends for their warm welcome.
And a special "thanks" to Giovanni, Giuliana, Christina and Daniele Cozza and
all the staff at Casanova Quarter Horses for opening up their farm for us.

Article: Show Pen Maintenance You train at home, and show at the shows--right?
Well, if you do, you may be missing a key component to success with your horse:
a little thing called show pen maintenance. It's one thing to have the horse
physically trained and conditioned to head off to the shows; but keeping him
mentally conditioned during the show season can be an even bigger challenge...
